    How to Find Your Serial Number

    Your Payne serial number can typically be found on:

    • A metal nameplate on the outdoor unit
    • Inside the blower compartment door of the furnace
    • On your original installation paperwork

    Note: Payne is a subsidiary of Carrier, so serial number formats may be similar.

    Payne Serial Number Formats

    Style 1: 4006A17330

    Ten character format: 4 digits + 1 letter + 5 digits. Week of manufacture is 1st-2nd digits (40 = week 40). Year is 3rd-4th digits (06 = 2006).

    Style 2: 850304091

    Nine character all-numerical format. Year is 1st-2nd digits (85 = 1985). Month is 3rd-4th digits (03 = March). Used primarily in the early 80s.

    Style 3: W4D14008 (1980-1984)

    Eight character format: 1 letter + 1 digit + 1 letter + 5 digits. Month is 1st character (M=Jan, N=Feb, P=Mar, Q=Apr, R=May, S=Jun, T=Jul, V=Aug, W=Sep, X=Oct, Y=Nov, Z=Dec). Year is 2nd digit (0=1980, 1=1981, 2=1982, 3=1983, 4=1984).

    Style 4: A167890 (1970-1979)

    Seven character format: 1 letter + 6 digits. Month is 1st character (A=Jan, B=Feb, C=Mar, D=Apr, E=May, F=Jun, G=Jul, H=Aug, I=Sep, J=Oct, K=Nov, L=Dec). Year is 2nd digit (0=1970, 1=1971, ..., 9=1979).
